Milford Sound facts

Getting there

enjoy astonishing vistas of meadows, faultless waterfalls, river flats, imposing mountains and lush rainforests
travel through the Homer Tunnel, into a breathtaking amphitheatre of snow-capped peaks at the head of Cleddau Canyon
catch your first glimpse of the magnificent Mitre Peak, ascending one mile into the sky

What can I see?

vast walls rise up from the majestic fiord, rendering cruise boats mere specks on the horizon
the fiord was created thousands of years ago during the ice ages
it’s the most dramatic of the fiords in the National Park
steep walls of rock plunge vertically for hundreds of metres above and below the water line
UNESCO granted World Heritage status to Milford Sound in 1986 – after just a few moments here you’ll appreciate why

Remember to:

breathe deeply the fresh air and take a contemplative moment
keep your keen eyes open for wildlife - you could be lucky enough to spot seals, dolphins and penguins in their natural habitat, depending on the season
be grateful if it’s raining – it turns the wonderful waterfalls into cascading waterwalls!
catch some rare marine life as you explore the Underwater Observatory
feel just a little envious of the locals who can – and often do – take their pilgrimage to this incredible place every year
